VOTE AGAINST PROP 1 - HISD Recapture

Houston voters will decide on a ballot initiative that, if approved, would take away $162 million from the Houston ISD schools and students. Proposition 1, the “recapture” would force the already cash-strapped school district to send local property tax dollars back to the state. VOTE AGAINST PROP 1.

The so-called “Robin Hood” school finance law allows the state to receive local revenues from districts that are considered “property wealthy” to redistribute to pay for public education in other districts.

HISD is considered “property wealthy,” even though more than 90 percent of its schools qualify for federal Title I funds, because they are located in communities with high concentrations of low-income children and families.

Instead of taking money from Houston’s schools and students, it’s time for the state to invest in our children and our future by fixing the school funding formula.

Voters have an opportunity to take a stand for Houston’s schools and students. VOTE AGAINST PROP 1 - HISD Recapture.
