Tell Rep. Elkins to Oppose the Union Dues Deduction Bill
By now you've probably heard that the the Texas legislature is meeting in Austin for a Special Session, and that working families are the target of many proposals during the session, which if passed, would lower wages, hurt our public schools, and make it harder to organize and fight for pensions and safe working conditions.
Among the anti-worker bills in the legislature is one that outlaw payroll dues deduction for union or professional association membership for teachers, firefighters, correctional officers, child abuse investigators, and other public employees. But thanks to our work together to support a bipartisan coalition of legislators, that bill has not advanced thus far.
That's where you come in. Your state representative, Gary Elkins, chairs a key committee in the Texas House -- the Committee on Government Transparency and Operation. Now, some big business special interests are pressuring Representative Elkins to pass the so-called "dues deduction" bill through his committee.
It's time for us to make our voices heard, and tell Representative Elkins to oppose any efforts to interfere with the economic freedom of teachers, firefighters, correctional officers, and child abuse investigators to spend their hard-earned paychecks as they see fit.
