Tell WV Senators Joe Manchin & Shelley Capito To Stand With Labor & Support DC Statehood!

Sen. Joe Manchin, Sen. Shelley Capito

The West Virginia AFL-CIO stands with our union siblings in the District of Columbia in their fight for DC statehood. We urge Senators Joe Manchin and Shelly Capito to cosponsor S.51, the Washington, D.C. Admission Act.

Add your name today to tell Senators Joe Manchin and Shelly Capito that we need DC statehood now!

Background:

More than 710,000 residents, including 40 thousand union members, are working in the District of Columbia without any representation in Congress. Decisions about wages, pay for the public sector, safety, and rights on the job within the District of Columbia are determined by the DC Council and Mayor, yet can be overruled by Congress through processes not applicable to any other city, county, or state.

These laws impact everyone who works in the District of Columbia, regardless of where they live. As residents in West Virginia who do not have this oversight, we firmly believe that this is an injustice of taxation without representation, which is the core of our American values.

More than 710,000 American citizens – including more than 40,000 tax paying union members – deserve to have full representation in Congress through the only Constitutional remedy, which is Washington, DC statehood.

Just as the state of West Virginia was created as we stood against the confederacy in the Civil War, we believe DC statehood is an issue of justice, fairness, and core American values.

That's why we are calling on you, our senators, to join us in being on the right side of history.
