Governor Abbott: VETO SB4 -"Show Me Your Papers" Bill

Texas Governor Greg Abbot

Governor Greg Abbott is poised to sign Senate Bill 4 — the so-called "Show Me Your Papers” bill which would force local police departments to act as federal immigration agents. This legislation will drive immigrant workers further into the shadows, afraid to speak up when their employer manipulates them, exploits them, or underpays them. That could drive down wages for all Texans.

There’s a reason organized labor, police chiefs from across the state, and immigrant advocates have all come together to oppose making Texas a Show Me Your Papers state.

This divisive proposal does nothing to improve the lives of working families in our state. Instead, by forcing our community police departments to act as a federal immigration force, Senate Bill 4 will hurt our economy and cost our state good jobs, create fear in our communities, attack our constitutional rights, and will lead to racial profiling.

The Texas labor movement has a proud tradition of fighting for working families — immigrants and those who were born here, alike. From striking pecan shellers in San Antonio nearly 80 years ago, to striking steel workers in the Golden Triangle just 2 years ago, Texas working families always have each others backs. That’s why right now we need you step up and join the fight against Senate Bill 4.

Senate Bill 4 - The "Show Me Your Papers" Bill is a direct attack on Texas values and hard working families who deserve a fair shot.

We urge you to veto Senate Bill 4 - it will tear hard working Texas families apart & make our communities less safe.
