Don’t Weaken Florida's Child Labor Laws

Florida State Legislators

The Florida House of Representatives rushed the passage of HB 49 to strip long-standing protections for children in the workplace. The bill is now in the Florida Senate which is also considering SB 1596, a less draconian bill but one that still weakens protections for children at work.

The bills, backed by national conservative groups and construction company trade groups, would rollback protections against 16 year olds and 17 year olds working long hours and in dangerous environments, even on school days.

These types of laws allow employers to pay less and offer less benefits, under the guise of providing 'spending money' jobs to teenagers — legalizing the exploitation of young Floridians and undercutting wages and benefits for other workers.

TAKE ACTION: Sign the petition and tell Florida legislators to leave our Child Labor Laws alone and stop exploiting young people for corporate profits.

Please oppose HB 49/SB 1596, which would allow employers to schedule 16- and 17-year-olds to work longer hours, without breaks, and overnight, even on school days.

HB 49/SB 1596 both invite exploitation of our children, while deprioritizing education. Research shows that teens who work more than 15 hours a week are more likely to drop out of high school, and that the more hours a high school student works, the lower their grades tend to be.

I urge you to protect our children's well-being and protect them from exploitation by vigorously opposing HB 49/SB 1596.
