We are thrilled to welcome Don Barlett and Jim Steele to the AFL-CIO to talk about their New York Times bestseller, The Betrayal of the American Dream. Don and Jim are one of the most widely acclaimed investigative reporting teams in American journalism. Working at The Philadelphia Inquirer, they won two Pulitzer Prizes for their searing reporting on what was happening in the lives of ordinary Americans, which they turned into a definitive book that chronicled the slow and steady damage being inflicted on the American dream. Later, at Time magazine, they earned the National Magazine Award twice, becoming the first journalists in history who had won a Pulitzer for their newspaper work to also win its magazine equivalent. In their new book, The Betrayal of the American Dream, Barlett and Steele show how a prosperous new ruling elite has systematically impoverished our middle class and made it far less certain our children will enjoy a better life than their parents.
