Save High Speed Rail and Wisconsin Jobs

The Wisconsin State AFL-CIO is urging Governor-elect Scott Walker to reconsider his plan to cancel federally funded high speed rail construction.  This vital commuter connection between Milwaukee and Madison would create thousands of family supporting jobs and spur future economic development.  Sign the petition in support of Wisconsin jobs today!

Dear Governor-elect Walker,

Great leaders must often summon the courage to change course. With that in mind, the Wisconsin labor movement urges you to reconsider your position on the high speed rail. This is an opportunity to create good, family-wage jobs and set the stage for further economic growth.

The job and economic losses from cancellation are as follows:
• Construction Jobs: 4,732 (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel 11-5-10)
• Permanent Jobs: 9,570 (Sierra Club, 11-5-10)
• $173 million in increased Wisconsin household income (Sierra Club, 11-5-10)

On top of that, returning the $810 million in federal funding for this project would actually cost the state a great deal of money. Wisconsin would have to pay back the federal government and contractors for work already done.

The federally funded high speed rail line between Milwaukee and Madison will save and create Wisconsin jobs. Please don’t stop economic development dead in its tracks. Allow high speed rail construction to resume.

Sincerely,
